Retired professor gives Webster Springs' scenic boardwalk new life

In 1875, Benjamin C. Conrad, who built a grist mill and hotel along the Back Fork of the Elk River in the years following the Civil War, decided to spare his customers a milelong slog over a road that was muddy year-round to reach his properties.
